Camping Activities

Well, you're finally all set up at your site and it's time to relax, read a book, get the fishing gear ready, or slip away to the woods for a hand-holding walk with the one you love. Then you remember that you've got three excited calves-- er, kids, shouting for you to take them swimming and play games with them!

Fishing Fun!Moore's Pond and the Chocorua River are an angler's delight. The water here covers 55 acres and reaches a depth of 38 feet, meaning it's is a perfect place to fish for bass, trout, pickerel, perch, sunfish, shiners and hornpout! Just cast a line baited with worm, 'crawler, lure or fly and you'll be sure to hook a live one. Good fishing can be had from the banks or from a boat. Remember to throw back the "small fry" fish - keep the waters stocked for future fun!

Folks, I'm a confirmed bachelor, but even I appreciate the peace and quiet that the recreational directors provide us older campers.

Rec. Hall Be as active or relaxed as you choose while the kids enjoy the full schedule of organized camping activities. Daily directed programs are available. Children ages 6 and above are welcome to attend without their parents and younger ones may join with parental supervision. The activities are geared toward recognition and respect for the environment, learning and creativity, social interaction and, most of all, fun!

Chocorua Camping Village often hosts fishing tournaments in three age categories. Prizes awarded have included a free weekend of camping, free ice cream and even a diploma of recognition!

Investigating a Vernal Pool
Grab your nets and buckets! We're going on a hike to identify and investigate the life cycles of some of my favorite creepy crawlers. Did you know that vernal pools are free of fish? They provide important breeding habitat for many vertebrate and invertebrate species such as frogs, salamanders, aquatic insects and turtles. Despite being dry most of the year, once filled they are teeming with life. It's muddy and educational at the same time. It just doesn't get any better than that.

Bike Weekend, Kids-Can-Bike-Rodeo
Wow, school's almost out! Don't miss this opportunity to educate the children about the safety aspects of riding a bicycle on streets and roads. Join in on our Bike Rodeo course for young bicycle drivers in the hope of preventing accidents. The children challenge themselves on our "chalk street" course where they are shown where and how to apply the rules. Activities include: helmet fitting, hand signals, safety maneuvers and the rules of the road. Teens may find the answer to their prayers right here on the property. We have five miles of nature trails suitable for mountain biking. Long distance riders may decide to hit the road on one of the off site bike tours that meander through the countryside. This bike weekend has something for everyone. So check your tire pressure and grab your helmets. It's time to ride.

Motion and Design Weekend
Drivers start your engines! It's NASCAR Weekend. Bring your favorite Matchbox or Hot Wheel cars to race against your fellow campers. Zoom, Zoom, Zoom! Using Knex construction materials and rubber band technology campers design and build vehicles. They test how fast the vehicles move and use their findings to redesign the vehicles to move more efficiently. As campers design their vehicles, they intuitively apply concepts such as friction, kinetic and potential energy. The activity concludes with our Road Course Driver Permit Challenge. Let's hope your permit isn't revoked or your insurance cancelled. Make your parents proud.

Each year on July 4th, Chocorua Camping Village celebrates that freedom and independence with our fun craft activities and patriotic parade. The children can decorate their bikes and helps us decorate our golf carts and hay wagon for the parade. Have you ever wondered why the flag is red, white and blue? The white signifies purity and innocence, the red signifies valor and bravery and the blue signifies vigilance, perseverance and justice. Come help us wave the flag on this most American of holidays. Join us in displaying your patriotic colors.

Marshmallow Madness
Marshmallows are incredibly cool. Technically, marshmallows are a candy. They've been around in the form we know them since the mid-1800s. They are called "marshmallows" because part of the early recipe called for sap from the root of the marshmallow plant. Yuck! Later, the root was replaced by gelatin, and that is how modern marshmallows are made. Marshmallow activities will be tops on our list this weekend. What could be more fun than investigating spider webs, making a marshmallow spider and designing a web to take home? How about building a marshmallow shooter? Yes, this will be a weekend of mind blowing confectionary madness. I'm thinking a campfire on the beach? We'll toss them, roast them and toast them. Warning: Do not eat marshmallows after shooting. When velocity and distance are incorporated into the equation, the five second rule is dramatically increased.

Christmas in July
You better watch out, you better not cry, better not pout , do you want to know why? Santa Claus is coming to Chocorua Camping Village in July. We'll start with some Christmas craft fun and "Holly Jolly" gift bag decorating. Site decorating is a fun and festive family activity. A visit from Santa and our holiday hayride are highlights for the children. Will we be able to make a REAL snowman in July again this year? Let the peace and good will of this special holiday create lasting memories for our family, friends and neighbors.

Christmas in July Geocaching Weekend

What is Geocaching? Geocaching is an entertaining outdoor adventure. It is a treasure hunt that requires people to use a global positioning system (GPS) to search for containers, known as geocaches. A caches is hidden by another treasure hunter called a geocacher. Geocaching is a great activity for all ages. It encourages responsible behavior and a respect for the environment. If you take something, leave something. Always make fair trades and log your visit. Leave the site better than you found it. Educate those around you to this new experience. You'll be hooked! Find another cache and be happy. If parents want to explore nature with their children or just enjoy the outdoors, there's a geocache adventure that's right for your family everywhere you go. Check it out at http://www.geocaching.com . If you hide it they will come. It's all about the journey. Come and enjoy the journey.

Technology & Engineering Weekend
What are technology-engineering activities? Technology-engineering activities and projects provide children with a foundation for planning, hands-on building and testing within a set of design criteria. Bet you can't say that three times fast. They are an excellent platform for problem solving based learning. Fun, did I mention they are fun to do? This weekend's technology engineering projects will be a family egg drop challenge, design a marshmallow catapult using a coat hanger and building crazy Capsela contraptions that really work. Design requirements will be outlined and provided for the weekend. Are you up for the challenge?

Carnival & Variety Show Weekend
Our Mini Carnival, sponsored by the Girl Scouts of America, is a fun filled afternoon for our campers. The activities in 2007 included tattooing, face painting, ring toss, a water balloon toss and much more. That's right, America has talent and it's right here this weekend in Chocorua New Hampshire. Some people can sing. Some can dance or act. Some people, like me, just think they can! Stage performances typically range from dance, synchronized step, singing, skits, and instrumentals. "Chocorua Has Talent" and this show transforms ordinary everyday campers into "All Stars". This is an evening of entertainment and enjoyment that will bring a smile to your face.

Things That Fly, Flight Toys
Have you ever dreamed of flying? As a child, you may have run full speed with your arms stretched and flapping, hoping that--just a little faster--you could take off. Most of us have probably had these dreams. Lift, gravity, thrust and drag are the four forces that push and pull an airplane in flight. This weekend's activities will shot for the skies. We'll experiment with different paper airplane designs, along with some other interesting flight toys like boomerangs, flutter fish and paper helicopters. This is our wind and wings weekend.
